Nathan Fillion fans can relax: outlandish behaviour at this year’s Supanova Pop Culture Expo will not see you lampooned in his upcoming online TV series Con Man just yet.

Fillion, who is a fan favourite at conventions for his role in the short-lived cult sci-fi series Firefly, as well as his six-year stint as crime-fighting novelist Castle, is co-producing the show created and written by Firefly cast mate Alan Tudyk.

The comedy series, which raised more than $US3.1 million ($4 million) on crowdfunding platform Indiegogo in April, is based loosely on their experiences after Firefly was cancelled in 2002.

“Last year at this time, Alan said he was signing on to do a couple more cons because he needed ideas for some episodes,” Fillion toldAAA with a laugh. “He is the one who has been writing all of the episodes, it is really his baby and he has allowed me to tag along with him on his adventure.

“Filming has started, it is almost midway through and everything is going really well.”

This year’s Supanova marks Fillion’s first trip to Perth but he said previous visits to Australia had taught him to expect “light-hearted, excited and energetic” fans.

“I find Australians to be very much like Canadians — there is not a lot you can do to bother them, they are polite and observe the pleasantries and they are very, very welcoming,” he confided.

“What is really wonderful is that people constantly come up to me and say ‘I just discovered Firefly. I just a week ago, discovered Firefly and I watched it and I can’t believe it was cancelled’.

“It is wonderful for me because that was a show that was near and dear to my heart and I wasn’t wrong about loving it.”

But while he says the fans are the best part of any convention, Fillion has one tip: if you want to stop and chat, make time to get along to the Q&A sessions.

“The panels are my favourite time because that is when we all stop and actually sit down and get down to the nitty-gritty, and I can understand where the fans are in their heads, what burns inside them, why they like it, what is important for them to know,” he said.

“Whether I see a Firefly fan or a Castle fan, we all have one thing in common — we are all fans.”

Supanova is on at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre from Friday to Sunday.
